Wab Kinew promised to strengthen rent controls in 2023, a promise that remains unfulfilled.
During the 2023 provincial election, Wab Kinew promised to “make life more affordable for renters” and “strengthen rent controls with legislation to protect renters from big rate hikes”. The first rent regulation Bill that was introduced stalled in 2024, and no new Bill was introduced in spring 2025.
We refused to let that happen again in spring 2026 and we forced this issue back onto the agenda. “New rules to stop unfair rent increases and strengthen renters’ rights” was one of the highlights in the November 2025 Throne Speech, which outlines what the government expects to achieve during the next legislative session.
The new legislation is expected to be introduced on March 4, 2026. However, Premier Wab Kinew recently softened his government’s commitment, signalling weaker protections for renters than initially promised – something “closer to real rent control.” The Bill’s details are still unknown. Those details will determine whether renters get real protection – or more loopholes.
Help us fight for legislation that keeps rents affordable, restricts above-guideline rent increases, ends exemptions to rent regulations, and prevents landlords from using rent discount reversals to increase rents. Anything less will leave thousands of renters vulnerable to unfair rent hikes.
