Right to Housing

On Wednesday, March 28, five students from the University of Winnipeg held an action to promote the Red Tent petition to defend social housing in Canada. To catch people’s attention they set up a mock bachelor apartment in a busy walkway outside the main campus building. Using a combination of charm, and harassment, they talked students and faculty into stopping, then told them about the expiring operating grants and urged them to sign the petition. By the end of their four hour action they had collected over five hundred signatures.

Housing in crisis - City’s blowing a chance for growth - Bartley Kives (June 6, 2011)

Winnipeg Free Press reporter, Bartley Kives cites the lack of apartment buildings and excess of condo conversions as the major contributors to Winnipeg’s shortage of affordable housing.

“It’s been said many times, but this amounts to a housing crisis. Many people moving to Winnipeg cannot find a place to live and many people of modest means who already live here can’t afford to remain, if they have to move, for any reason.”
